Thailand Visa Agent vs DIY: A Due-Diligence Guide

A visa agent can organise papers, translate, book logistics and reduce the friction of an office visit. An agent cannot turn an ineligible application into a lawful one or take over the official decision.

The useful question is not “Are agents good or bad?” It is:

Which exact task am I buying, what remains my responsibility, and how will I prove what was submitted in my name?

Start with the official-route overview and the responsible Immigration office’s current checklist. Then compare the cost of help with the burden it genuinely removes.

Map the work before comparing prices

Split the application into tasks. A typical extension project can involve:

1. confirming the correct immigration route;
2. calculating the last safe filing date;
3. obtaining bank, income, residence and identity evidence;
4. completing the correct form;
5. copying, translating or certifying documents;
6. booking and attending an appointment where required;
7. paying the government fee;
8. answering an officer’s request for more evidence;
9. checking every stamp and date before leaving; and
10. preserving the final application record.

Mark each task DIY, agent, bank/translator, or Immigration. If a quote cannot be mapped to that list, it is not yet a comparable quote.

What stays with the applicant

Even with paid help, you should personally understand:

• the route being requested;
• the permission-to-stay date in your passport;
• the official financial or other eligibility test;
• every material statement made in your name;
• which originals have left your possession;
• the government fee and private charge;
• whether personal attendance is required; and
• the result, conditions and next reporting date.

Do not sign blank forms, undated declarations or documents you cannot read without a translation or explanation. False information does not become safe because someone else typed it.

When DIY is the stronger choice

DIY often suits a stable, straightforward case when you can obtain the evidence, understand the current official instructions and attend the responsible office or use the applicable official online service.

Advantages include:

• direct knowledge of what Immigration asked for;
• complete control of your passport and originals;
• a clean record of the official fee;
• easier repetition next year; and
• no dependency on one private provider.

DIY is not “free.” Price the transport, printing, translation, time, mobility demands and risk of a second visit. A realistic comparison values your effort without inventing a private market rate.

When paid help may be worth it

A defined service can be useful when:

• language makes a document request hard to understand;
• disability or limited mobility makes repeated visits costly;
• records span several banks, countries or name variations;
• certified translations or legal advice are genuinely required;
• a prior refusal or unusual immigration history needs professional analysis; or
• you want an independent pre-filing completeness check.

Administrative help and legal advice are different products. If the problem is legal eligibility, disputed status, overstay, arrest risk or a previous adverse decision, ask what professional qualification supports the advice instead of assuming “visa agent” means lawyer. The quote must separate three kinds of money

Ask for an itemised written quote with:

1. Government fees — name the form or service and amount.
2. Private service fee — state exactly which tasks the agent performs.
3. Third-party costs — translations, certification, photographs, courier, transport or bank documents.

For the retirement-extension TM.7 process, the Immigration Bureau public handbook lists a 1,900-baht government fee. That does not tell you what a private service should charge, and it does not mean every other immigration service has the same fee.

The quote should also state:

• applicant name and exact route;
• filing office;
• included and excluded tasks;
• documents you must supply;
• target dates, without promising an official result;
• cancellation and refund terms;
• who absorbs a cost caused by the agent’s error;
• payment milestones; and
• the registered name that will issue the receipt.

“All inclusive” is not itemisation.

Verify the business, then verify the transaction

If the contracting party is a Thai company, search its exact Thai or English name and registration number in DBD DataWarehouse+. Compare the status, registered address and other identifying details with the quote and payment instructions.

This check has a strict limit. The Department of Business Development itself warns that registration information confirms legal registration and is only one component of due diligence. It does not prove that:

• the salesperson represents that company;
• the bank account belongs to the contracting party;
• the company is endorsed by Immigration;
• the advertised method is lawful; or
• the service will be competent.

Cross-check the phone number and bank-account name independently. Be cautious when the invoice names one entity, the transfer goes to an unrelated individual and the office sign shows another name.

Control passport and original-document custody

An original passport may be needed for a legitimate filing step. That does not justify vague or indefinite custody.

Before handover, record:

• passport holder’s name and passport number;
• pages already carrying important visas or stamps;
• receiver’s full name and company;
• purpose of custody;
• date and time received;
• where it will be stored and taken;
• latest promised return; and
• an urgent contact and escalation route.

Keep a complete scan. Ask for a signed receipt. Do not send an original passport through an informal rider or leave it with an unidentified salesperson because “this is normal.”

Build an application file you control

Your archive should contain:

• the official checklist used;
• the agent’s quote and terms;
• every submitted form and attachment;
• translations and certifications;
• passport handover and return receipts;
• payment records and official receipts;
• appointment confirmation;
• messages about changes or extra documents;
• the final stamp or decision; and
• the next reporting and expiry dates.

After return, check names, passport number, permission dates, stamp category and any annotations yourself. Use the 90-day reporting guide and TM30 guide to keep separate obligations from being collapsed into “the agent handles everything.”

Red flags that end the conversation

Walk away when a provider:

• guarantees approval or a stamp;
• promises to bypass a published eligibility requirement;
• will not identify the exact route or filing office;
• combines every payment into an unexplained cash price;
• refuses an invoice or receipt;
• asks you to sign a blank or false document;
• wants original documents without a custody record;
• discourages direct confirmation with Immigration;
• claims company registration is proof of government approval;
• creates artificial urgency unrelated to your real deadline; or
• ties immigration help to an investment, loan, property purchase or guaranteed return.

If something goes wrong

First protect the immigration deadline. A consumer dispute does not pause permission to stay.

Then:

1. request the passport and originals back in writing;
2. preserve advertisements, chats, quotes, payment slips, receipts and submitted forms;
3. ask the responsible Immigration office to verify your status and any filing said to have been made;
4. use the Immigration Bureau or local-checkpoint complaint channels listed in the public handbook for an immigration-service issue; and
5. consider the Office of the Consumer Protection Board complaint system for a dispute with a business.

OCPB’s help page says its online workflow requires details of the complained-about business and supporting evidence, and issues a tracking number for status follow-up. It is an escalation channel, not emergency immigration relief.

The decision test

Choose DIY when the case is clear and the logistics are manageable. Choose paid help when you can name the specific barrier the service removes and verify the provider, scope, custody and records.

Do not buy a promised result. Buy a documented task.
